Taphouse in St Kilda to expand next door (as works on Darlo roof terrace due to finally start)

Above: The cat is finally out of the bag

After many months of planning, and after receiving the liquor licence last week, we can finally let the cat out of the bag..

The Local Taphouse in St Kilda is taking over next door (180 Carlisle Street), knocking it down, except for the heritage facade, building two levels (three levels at the rear) to accomodate more dining areas, function areas, a second outdoor terrace, offices and a special surprise. We will also be extending our existing restaurant area and kitchen and creating Wilfred's Private Dining Room similar to Darlo's.

All going well, it will open by Christmas or early in 2011.

With the roof terrace works in Darlo due to start very shortly, it's going to be a busy end to the year..

  1. Congrats!
Will the second outdoor terrace be at least partly non-smoking? The current terrace area can get a little oppressive when there is no wind :-(

  2. I hear ya John. Did you ever hear the one about how when first opened, the terrace was Melbourne's first non-smoking beer garden? It lasted 3 weeks of a 6 week trial!

The second terrace (joined by a door to the existing terrace) can be booked out as part of the new function room but we have discussed non-smoking options and would love to sort something out if manageable..

  3. Is the surprise a bed that you can book as last minute overnight accommodation if you drink too much? If it isn't - can I patent that idea if you nick it and take a share of the proceeds?! Haha. Sounds really exciting guys, can't wait to see it. Which way next door is it (or in other words, what building are you taking over)?

  4. That's a great idea Briony and a % is yours if we do it ;-)

As you look at The Local from across the road, it's the one of the left.

  5. I too would love to see an outdoor non-smoking area. An expansion of the terrace should surely allow you to cater to all patrons. Looking forward to the renos and, hopefully, sitting outside in the FRESH air!
