St Kilda February Ale Stars - USA Medley

It was a case of big, bigger, biggest at the Ale Star beer appreciation session in St Kilda last Tuesday as we hopped (see what I did there) into some US beers that really packed a punch.

In order of appearance, the beers were Bear Republic Red Rocket Ale, Green Flash West Coast IPA, Clown Shoes Eagle Claw Fist and Weyerbacher Brewing Co Old Heathen.

Best 'low alcohol' beer went to the Red Rocket Ale, coming in at a paltry 6.8%. Best picture (on the label) went to the kung fu character on the Eagle Claw Fist bottle. Leading beer in a foreign style was the Old Heathen, a Russian Imperial Stout. And last but not least, best supporting beer went to Green Flash's West Coast IPA, mainly for supporting the hop heads out there.

You can see all the pics here.

And as mentioned on the night, March is an Ale Stars extravaganza - with a special event on Thursday, March 8th with Mikkel from Mikkeller in Denmark as our special guest - click here to book your spot.

And then we have Ales Stars in its regular timeslot on March 20th with special guest Josh Scott from Moa Brewing in New Zealand!! Click here to book for this one. Wow.

Celebrity judges rock in to Feb BrewShare

Who doesn't love summer? Who doesn't love beer?

Anyone who answers 'no' to either question may tune out now...

With a theme such as 'summer', we knew that this instalment of BrewShare would produce some inspired elixirs. We could not, however, have predicted just how inspired. The scale of imagination, ingenuity and practical application exhibited by our 25 brave home brewers made me think 'Geez this is a progressive city!'.

With beers ranging from raspberry pale ales to golden rye I.P.A.'s, Tuesday night at the Taphouse felt more like a picnic at Palm Beach. Fifty odd homebrew enthusiasts gathered into teams to taste, talk, counsel, coach and critique each others D.I.Y. offerings. In line with tradition, the enlightened mob filtered through the collective body of work down to a top three.

This is the part where Dave (of Dave's Home Brew) and myself labour over the arduous task of deciding on a first, second and third place. Men of great nobility, charm (and flawless good looks) we decided on this occasion to pass on the responsibility. As luck would have it, in town to judge at the Royal Easter Show Beer Comp, were Brad Rogers of Stone & Wood and Richard Watkins of Wig and Pen fame took to the challenge with the kind of poise possessed by only the truest pro's.

Sam Haldane came out on top with his InnerWest Berlinerweisse (winning the $100 voucher from Dave's homebrew). Runners up were Jack McIntyre with his RyeIPA, Sam Fletcher with his
Jabberwock Hoppy Pilsner and an amazingly drinkable Fennel Wit from Glen.

Much thanks also to Richard Adamson from Young Henry (previously from Barons Brewing) and Brian Watson for hanging out to talk beer with Sydney's up n' comers of the scene.

The next Brewshare is set for 22/05/2012 with the theme 'single hop'.

So come on Sydney, get brewin'!

Homebrewers Alert: Brew a beer for Nogne O's Kjetil Jikiun at Special Edition St Kilda BrewShare in May!

Towards the end of Melbourne's Good Beer Week in May, the St Kilda Taphouse, ANHC and Grain & Grape are running an awesome event just for homebrewers.

The Special Edition
Taphouse BrewShare is on Saturday May 19th from 3pm and will see us joined by a VERY Special Guest, Kjetil Jikiun
(photo above) from the world-renowned Nogne O. Known as an outstanding homebrewer before he became an outstanding pro brewer, Kjetil will be part of a 'Q & Ale' session before judging the best homebrew brewed especially for the event.

Kjetil has suggested three beer styles so we want you to vote on which one you think it should be! The poll ends Sunday March 4th at midnight. We will announce the final beer style the following day so you can get brewing!

For those who would prefer, there will be an Open Class too but the "Brew to Style" comp is where the real prestige is at!

Tickets can be purchased here for $25 and there are limited spots. We will need all brewers to brew FIVE litres of beer.

To cast your vote in the poll, click here.

Taphouse Boss caught out in Daiquiri Scandal!

Steve Jeffares, the CEO and owner of The Local Taphouse was caught out last month with not a beer, but a Strawberry Daiquiri in hand. Sources say they saw the beverage mogul drinking with associates at Opera Bar, a Sydney bar notoriously known for it's poncy cocktails and pantywaisted individuals, when to their utter shock they noticed he was sipping from a straw in what witnesses called a 'saphic' fashion.

Mr Jeffares has been infamously known to never stray from the barley tipple and this is proof that once you stray from Melbourne, you step out of your chinos and into a rainbow skirt.

Guy Greenstone, his business partner, was unavailable for comment but an insider source known only as "Elroy" stated that he too was enjoying a non-wheaty brew and indulging in a Margarita, but this cannot be denied or confirmed.

More news as it comes to hand.

Delicious morsels from some of Melbourne’s great restaurants and street/market vendors will also be available. The currency for the festival will be GABS tokens which you can purchase either online with your ticket or at the venue. That was a tasty Ales stars in Darlo

Well, first and foremost, thank you to all of our Ale Stars who attended our 'US Medley' session in Darlo ten days ago. It was such a great night. Hosted by our Ale Stars Tzar 'Doc', we listened whilst he took us through the fantastic stories of Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, Green Flash 'Le Freak' Belgium IPA, Moylans Old Blarney Barleywine & Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout.

All were extremely tasty with the Racer 5 voted Beer of the Night. With announcements of up & coming events from bowse of bowses, Steve J, and a tough but fun trivia from dirty Dom it was a great vibe indeed. Stay tuned for information on the next Alestars coming soon which will be posted here soon.

Thanks to Andrew Mitchell for taking the photos!

Bring plenty of thirst for next Tuesday in Darlo. It could be a full house on all levels!

Just a quick reminder that next Tuesday will we have an action packed Local Taphouse in Darlo.
