Ale Stars with Moon Dog
For this month we are hosting a special Ale Stars with the
elusive Moon Dog Brewery from the rustic Abbotsford factory in back streets of
inner-city Melbourne.
Moon Dog has been consistently unleashing a new breed of
beer onto the Australian beer-loving public; blended styles, barrel aging, wild
fermentation, while using some weird and wonderful ingredients. The beers are
style-agnostic and irreverent with a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek, and an
attitude that says “Who cares? It’s only beer.”
We will be discussing (and drinking) the following beers;
with dinner included:
Love Tap – Double Lager – 5.9%
Bock Naked – Dark German Lager with Chipotle – 7.7%
Mummy Have A Bite – Toffee Apple Amber Ale – 8.2%
Jumping the Shark – Cognac Barrel Aged truffled Imperial
Stout – 15.5%
DETAILS:
Tuesday 22nd October, 7pm
Free entry for Ale Stars or BOOK ONLINE

Darlinghurst Gets Goated
After a few months of smaller, more intimate Ale Stars sessions up in the middle level, we returned to the main bar due to the huge pull of Mountain Goat, the granddaddies of Aussie Craft Beer. We were joined by Dave and Luke from Mountain Goat, and they regaled us with stories of the breweries history, the colourful characters inside the brewery and the excellent beers that are loved by so many Aussie drinkers. We were also lucky to have our Ale Star Tsar Doc back in the house after a 3 month leave of absence.

Schlenkerla's Schmokey Schession ImpreScheses Darlo Ale Schtars
A huge thanks to all of our awesome Darlinghurst Ale Stars who came to last month's smokey session. It was a great night, full of smokey booze, food, trivia and some special guests joining us from Germany.
The first beer, kicking off the night, was the Schlenkerla Helles Lager, from the excellent Schlenkerla brewery in Bamberg, Bavaria. Despite being the only beer of the night that wasn't a smoked beer, it had a nice subtle smokey flavour from the rest of the brewers equipment.
We were lucky enough to have a chat to Adam Brown, a former member of the Taphouse crew who now works for Weyerbacher Malt's experimental brewery in Bamberg. He gave us a great insight into brewing in Bamberg, and the whole tradition behind Rauchbier.
We then had both the Schlenkerla Marzen and Weizen, both of which have a lot of that classic smokey flavour that Schlenkerla is renowned for. A lot of people tasted bacon and BBQ smoke. While we drank these ones, we were joined by Matthias Trum Live from the Schlenkerla Brewery. He talked us through the history of the brewery, what goes in to making the beers and how they serve the beers at their historic brewpub.
To finish the night off, we had the amazing Nøgne Ø 100% Peated Ale. Our Ale Stars are no strangers to those Norwegian brewers (we were lucky enough to have Kjetil, the head brewer in for a session last year), but this was a first for Ale Stars. Despite exhibiting a huge amount of peat smoke, this beer was surprisingly drinkable, with a really smooth golden ale texture.
Thanks to everyone for coming, we'll see you all at the next session on Wednesday July 24th featuring the awesome beers and awesome guys from Riverside Brewing, including Dave Padden

Stu 'Mario Bros' Mckinlay Skypes the Darlo Ale Stars
This month’s highly anticipated Ale Stars session, featuring Stu McKinlay from New Zealands own Yeastie Boys, was an epic night of colourful pants, questionable comedy, awesome conversation and extremely tasty beers. Our skype conversation with Stu was informative, fun and extremely engaging. Despite some of us being a little dusty from Good Beer Week and GABS the week before in Melbourne, everyone had a great time.

St Kilda Bonza vs Darlo Black & Tannin - - Fight!
Last Wednesday, the Darlinghurst Ale Stars descended upon the Local Taphouse for the highly anticipated launch of the Ale Stars brews.
This was the first time that anyone in Sydney got a chance to taste the beer that the Sydney Ale Stars went up to Hunter Beer Co to brew (Black & Tannin), as well as the St Kilda offering (brewed at Mornington Peninsula Brewery), the BONZA IPA.
To start off the night, we invited Hunter Beer Head Brewer Keith Grice up to talk about one of his favourite beers; his own Hunter Bock. A beautiful bock, with rich caramel and toffee notes, this one was the perfect start to a very boozy evening. Keith talked us through the recipe, and how he's changed it recently, tweaking it to deliver the flavours that you'd expect from a bock.
We then moved onto a delicious Black Imperial Pilsner brewed by our very own 'Ale Stars Czar' Doc from Doctor's Orders Brewing. A beautifully balanced, yet very extreme beer, this found a really nice middle ground between getting dark flavours without being too thick or roasty, and being very hoppy without being aggressive.
We then sampled the competition, the BONZA IPA that the St Kilda Ale Stars brewed at Mornington. Named BONZA for its mix of Belgian yeast and Aussie, New Zealand and American hops, this one was very fruity and spicy, coming from both the Belgian yeast and the pacific hops.
The interstate fight continues... say tuned.

When 4 Pines came to Darlinghurst
Every month, a like-minded bunch of beautiful beer-lovers come and join us for our Alestars Beer Appreiciation evening. This past Wednesday we were also joined by the lovely guys from 4 Pines Brewing, Andrew and Chris, all the way from Manly. With them, they brought a handful of beers, 3 Single Hop Ales and their galaxy famous Stout.
First up was
the Hallertau Mittlefrüh Single Hop. Brewer Andrew Tweddell explained that they
wanted to showcase the different hop-growing regions of the world, so what
better place to start than with a classic German Noble hop? This one was the
cleanest tasting of the lot, with all of the subtleties of the noble hop coming
through.
Next was
Target hops from the UK. This one was rich and earthy, and more bitter than the
Hallertau. Having this side by side with the Hallertau showed just how much
impact hops have on the flavour, aroma and bitterness of a beer, despite
sharing the same base recipe.
The last
single hop we tried was the very New-World style American hop, Centennial. A
favourite of craft brewers for its potent buttering capabilities and its
distinct grapefruit and line flavour, it was used more sparingly than usual so
as not to overwhelm, but to illustrate the subtle flavouring
possibilities.
Finally, we
were treated to the 4 Pines Stout, the first beer to brewed specifically to be
commercially available in space. A rich, yet perfectly drinkable stout, this is
a perennial favourite of Aussie beer lovers, and went down a treat the other
night.
We were also treated
to a full explanation of 4 Pines' latest addition to their brewing arsenal, the
huge new Brookvale facility that has just started production. Brewer Chris
Willcock walked us through the challenges and advantages of the new system, and
helped explain how each beer was brewed and the individual characteristics of
each hop.
Big thanks to
Andrew and Chris, and everyone who came down to Darlinghurst for a lovely night
of Beer, Trivia, Fun and more Beer.

AG from Mornington and Doc from Doctor's Orders will be at St. Kilda and Darlo Taphouses respectively and we'll be sampling two of their great beers as well.

Well the time is almost upon us, the time to take a trip down to the Hunter Valley Beer Co. and create a delicious Shiraz Baltic Porter.
Members of our monthly beer appreciation society, Ale Stars, and friends are taking to the road this Saturday after months of hot debate and anticipation. At the December Ale Stars event, we finally decided on what style to go for and by more than majority share, we voted on a Shiraz Baltic Porter.
So, headed by our very own Ale Star Tsar & founder of 'Doctors Orders Brewing' Darren 'Doc' Robinson, brewing will begin this Saturday.

Anyway its all happening next Tuesday, January 15th at 7pm and its $40 for 4 beers and a bite to eat. And fun, lots of fun.

The Darlinghurst Ale Stars rode the Dark Horse
The November edition of Ale Stars pulled a small yet highly enthusiastic crowd wanting to taste for the first time in Sydney, the powerful force of The Dark Horse brewery from Marshall, Michigan.
The overseas delivery arrived on time (just) and we were not disappointed by the contents of the shipment.
Doc provided the quirky and fun natured back-story to the beers and the night got under way!
First up was the Sapient Trip Ale; a beer that despite its high ABV (all of the beers ranged from 9-14%!!) was surprisingly quite session-able. It was smooth with quite a fruity aroma but didn't stray too much away from the Abbey Tripel style. Think candied sugar, bubblegum, banana, and orange peel, with a refreshing dry finish.
The Scotty Karate Scotch Ale came in a 'light' second, and although some disagreed with its Scotch Ale status, it didn't disappoint with a smokey malt-driven taste and hints towards salted caramel candy. The name behind this beer is worth the research!
The Double Crooked Tree IPA was the third one in, and the room started to become a little chattier with the effects of the first two combined with Leroy keeping the crowd on their toes with a Star Wars discussion; as well as some exciting Taphouse news that only the lucky Ale Stars were privy to.
The Crooked Tree was an elusive beast (13.6% ABV), while being quite tame in its delivery, and having an easy drinking nature of a pale ale, it opened up a canvas of flavour as our glasses warmed up.
Last but certainly not least and with the room clearly aching for the last beer and with chants of "May the fourth beer be with us!"(please note: this did not really happen-refer to previous Star Wars discussion) we finished up with the Plead the 5th Imperial Stout and it was certainly one that all attendees were waiting on, with full-bodied roasted malt characteristics balanced with sweetness of molasses, and plum red wine notes, finishing with a espresso coffee bitterness.
The running trend across all the Dark Horse beers we tasted was that the high ABVs were very well disguised with balanced, well-blended tastes, as well as the intriguing depths that high gravity beers tend to have.
One thing that we all learnt from that special night was that everyone is certainly looking forward to more Dark Horse.
