Darlo Ale Stars - Hop Hop Hoppy
This month's Ale Star appreciation session in Darlo was all about hops. We had an amazing turnout on the night with 86 thirsty enthusiasts keen to get their mittens on brews that showcased certain hop varieties. Our special guest for the night was Tim Lord from Hop Products Australia (HPA) who came all the way from Tasmania to enlighten us about these plants that add such interesting flavours and characters to the drink we love.
The night started off with the Knappstein Reserve Lager. This is personally one of my favourite Australian lagers. This lager showcases the New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops and uses them extremely well to create amazing melon and citrus characters.
Little Creatures Pale Ale was next on the cards and we decided to put this through our Funky Brewster with a bucket load (maybe too much?!) of Galaxy and Cascade flowers. This gave the beer an intense grassy and melon taste which really showed the difference with extra hop flowers added.
Through out the night Tim was educating all involved about what hops are, Australian vs International hops and interesting information about the hop industry. It was great to hear interesting questions from Ale Star members and punters alike.
Our next two beers that followed were both from Bridge Road Brewery in Beechworth, Victoria. The Stella and Galaxy IPAs are both great beers to really highlight the single hops used.
Overall it was great to see so many people enjoying craft beer!
The next Ale Stars session is on Tuesday 6th September and will be focusing on IPA's. Booking for this event can be made here
