The ladies have a ball at Barley's Angels in St Kilda

What better way to spend a warm spring evening than with a few glasses of delicious beer and a selection of fine cheeses to match? 28 women were wise enough to get themselves into enjoyment mode and do just that at Tuesday night's Barley's Angels Cheese & Beer matching special.

Four beautiful cheeses were matched with five different beers from around the world :-

  1. English Cloth Cheddar (England) matched with Feral Hop Hog (Australia)
  2. Chimay Lave Biere (Belgium) matched with Chimay Rouge (Belgium)
  3. Luigi Guffanti Taleggio (Italy) matched with Feral White (Australia)
  4. Colston Bassett Stilton (England) matched with Mikkeller Tripel (Denmark) and Beer Here Okolgisk Yulewine (also Denmark)

There were a few favourite matches during the evenings pairing; the Luigi Guffanti Taleggio with Feral White seemed like an unusual combination of quite minerally and pungent aromas but they blended together with harmonious unity and provided a very pleasant and smooth result. Another winner was the combination of the Colston Basset Stilton with Mikkeller's Tripel, the tripel cut through the heavy, creamy texture and mouthfeel of the cheese and took the flavour to a more delicate and sharp finish. The complex phenols mingled with the spectacular blue mould and enhanced the fruity yet meaty flavour of the cheese. Delicious!

On top of all of this...we received a special treat from the Women of Beer! Presented by Jayne Lewis of Two Birds Brewing and Sam Fuss of True South Brewery (and a Taphouse Hall of Famer!), it was their Ninkasi's Angel! The Belgian style Tripel was brewed in July earlier this year at True South Brewery with additions of cardamom, cassia bark, grains of paradise and naked oats. Proceeds are being donated to the McGrath Breast Cancer Foundation. Beautifully presented in wax-sealed champagne bottles, we will also be seeing this fantastic brew on tap for the Ninkasi's Angel launch here at the Local Taphouse in St Kilda on the 25th October - details coming.

It was fantastic to have both Sam and Jayne at the event (...aside from the added pressure for me to get it all right!). Both women have been of momentous influence in the embracing of women into the world of great beer. Each of them are doing exceptionally well with Jayne about to launch her new brewery Two Birds and Sam about to have her brewery's 2year anniversary this December! Keep your taste-buds ready for what these (and the other Women of Beer) have in store for you!

Thanks to everyone who came! Its always such a pleasure to have a room full of wonderful, enthusiastic and positive women sharing my love and passion for good beer and food!. Subscribe to this blog or keep an eye out here for the details for the next session... and bring your friends and spread the word!
