'Hottest 100' Aussie Brews online poll begins!

Diligent beer lovers consider their voting choices.

In conjunction with our 2009 ‘Summer SpecTAPular’ beerfest on Australia Day Eve, The Local Taphouses in Melbourne and Sydney (if open in time) will be running the inaugural 'Hottest 100’ Aussie Brews poll in honour of Triple J's 'Hottest 100' annual tradition and open to lovers of better beer across the country.

The 'Hottest 100 Aussie Brews' online poll will open November 1st 2008 and close at midnight Sunday January 18th 2009. The final 100 beers (listed from #100 to #1) will be announced at the SpecTAPular with a case of each of the top 5 beers given away as door prizes.

A randomly selected voter (from anywhere in Australia, you don’t have to be @ the Fest) will win a case of each of the top FIVE beers. If you’re at the SpecTAPular on January 25th when the announcement is made, you’ll win a case of each of the top TEN beers. That's a LOT of great beer to enjoy!

In the poll, you simply list your top TEN hottest Australian beers of 2008 (with #1 being your favourite Australian beer). We will collate all votes to come up with the 'Hottest 100 Aussie Brews'.

International beers brewed under licence here are excluded. You can only vote once and anyone caught trying to influence the vote will be burnt at the stake - it's a bit of fun so don't spoil it for the rest of us!

2011 Hottest 100 - Back by popular demand!

The Local Taphouses in Sydney and Melbourne have run a Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Brews' poll for the past three years with the results always causing much debate.

The 'Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers of 2012' poll is now open for votes

Voting for The Local Taphouse's Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Brews of 2012 poll begins today.

Supported by Australian Brews News and Crafty Pint, the H100 is now in its fifth year and sees thousands of craft beer lovers from around Australia vote for their five favourite craft beers of the year.

All you need to do is select your FIVE favourite craft beers of 2012 and one randomly selected voter will win a case of each of the top FIVE beers (if not available, we'll keep going down the list until we have 5 cases).

Voting for the 'Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Brews' poll closes at 11:30pm on 15th January 2013 and the final 100 beers (listed from #100 to #1) will be announced on Australia Day on our blog, Australian Brews News and Crafty Pint. For those who want to know the results from last year, click here.

We ask that people only vote once. The beers must have been brewed in 2012 in Australia by breweries other than CUB's and Lion's main operations (i.e Matilda Bay and James Squire are eligible). The beer must have been commercially for sale in kegs or bottles.  Breweries are not permitted to offer prizes, incentives or inducements of any value in exchange for votes for their beers. Any clear breaches of this rule will lead to the votes being disqualified. We also reserve the right to remove votes that appear to be manufactured, or votes that we deem to be false.

Hot stuff in St Kilda x100

Celebrations were high as Melbourne graced us all with more glorious weather for this year's Australia Day. The beers flowed, Triple J pumped and the exciting news of the Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers of 2011 was released.

As Triple J revealed the top 10 hottest tunes of 2011, we in turn revealed the top 10 Aussie craft beers of 2011 voted for by the general public over the last month. There was much anticipation and debate about who would come out on top and the results showed a great variety of breweries from all across Australia. The chatting online around the country saw record numbers of people hitting the Crafty Pint and Australian Brews News websites, not to mention our own.

A massive congratulations to all the guys at Stone & Wood who took the number 1 spot with their excellent 'Pacific Ale'. A close 2nd was Little Creatures with their Pale Ale followed by Feral Brewing Co with the delicious Hop Hog IPA.

Thanks to all those who got involved and voted and congratulations to all the brewers and breweries who made it into the top 100. The more awareness we can shine on craft beer the better. Here's to next year's Hottest 100 Aussie craft Beers being even bigger again!

McLaren Vale Ale gets most votes in Hottest 100 Craft Beers of 2010 poll

The votes have been counted, the results for The Local Taphouse's Hottest 100 Craft Beers of 2010 poll are in and McLaren Vale’s Vale Ale has finally ended Little Creatures Pale Ale’s two-year reign as #1 hottest craft beer of the year.

Brilliantly utilising social media and its extensive email database, McLaren Vale ran a great campaign and came out on top as a result. Little Creatures Pale Ale remains phenomenally popular while Stone & Wood’s Draught/Pacific Ale came in with a bullet (as Molly Meldrum would say) to third position.

As the number of voters around the country skyrocketed beyond the hardcore craft beer fans, it is not surprising that some of the more widely distributed craft beers are rising to the top. But there are some wonderful exceptions. Feral’s Hop Hog IPA and Kooinda Pale Ale enjoyed a staggering rise in popularity, the latter particularly notable given its humble beginnings in a Melbourne garage only a few years ago. Further down the results makes for captivating reading as some one-off beers received strong support despite their very limited availability.

This year’s count had a staggering three times as many voters as last year (which was double the first year) and nearly 500 different beers from across Australia received votes. People from all around the country voted, confirming that an ever growing number of craft beer lovers are enjoying the fun (yet challenging!) task of listing their 5 favourite craft beers of the year. Reading on craftypint.com how hard beer industry folk found it to name their favourite 5 beers of the year made us all feel much better about how long it took us to cull and organise our lists!

From tiny breweries, to those on the larger side that just scrape into the ‘craft’ definition, and everything in between, 2010 saw votes for beers from VIC, TAS, NSW, SA, QLD, WA and ACT. Just about every imaginable style attracted votes with punters showing their fancy for hoppy Pale Ales and IPAs together with Hefeweizens, Stouts, and Porters.

Being a fun ‘People's Choice’ list as opposed to a ‘Critics Choice’ list meant everyone was in with a chance and, like McLaren Vale, canny breweries took the opportunity to mount campaigns for their beers and get friends, family and customers alike to vote for them. A new book is being published in a few months listing Australia's top beers according to critics and industry figures. It will be interesting and fun to compare the two lists!

A huge thanks also to craftypint.com for sponsoring the 2010 poll. I, for one, read with great interest what beer industry identities considered their favourite 5 beers of the year and rarely was their consensus. It was also fascinating to read the stories behind top ranking beers of recent years' polls.

Little Creatures Pale Ale has been named Australia’s favourite craft beer. The US-style, hoppy, 5.2 per cent ale, which has been copied by most microbreweries in recent years, came out top in the inaugural poll to find the “Hottest 100 Aussie Brews”.

The Fremantle brewery can be doubly proud because Little Creatures Bright – its 4.5 per cent summery ale - was the only other WA beer to make the top 10 of the voters’ choice.

The on-line poll run by Melbourne’s The Local Taphouse was open for almost three months and, while Melbourne’s cosmopolitan aficionados probably provided a majority of informed responses, hundreds of craft beer lovers from elsewhere in Australia were able to vote for their favourite tipple.

Some small-brewery beers don’t get much beyond their neighbourhood while bigger brands enjoy inter-state exposure, and this must be factored in when considering the poll results.

“Obviously, the most widely distributed craft beers would be more familiar to many of the people who voted,” The Local Taphouse’s Steve Jeffares admitted. “Still, all we wanted to do was get a feel for what people prefer to drink across Australia.

“The idea of the poll came when I was having a few drinks with friends on Australia Day eve in 2007. We were listening to The Top 100 songs on the radio and I thought it would be nice to get the public to vote for a similar list of their favourite beers. We have 20 craft beers on tap at any one time, and as it turns out we’ve already served more than 70 of the top 100.”

The top 10 “hottest” line-up reveals some interesting indicators. Most noticeable is the dominance by South Australian rather than WA craft breweries – helped by the popularity of the big Coopers’ brewery in SA and the presence there of a Lion Nathan brewery which makes some James Squire beers. Then, considering the poll was centred on Victoria, that State has only two representatives.

A nation awash with lagers may be astonished that nine of the 10 favourite brews are ales. Only one lager makes the elite list – the unique Knappstein Reserve, from the revived Enterprise brewery at a South Australian winery. Regular readers will recognise it as the one I’ve repeatedly named as the best domestic lager by far. Perth’s most savvy retailers agree and report that Knappstein’s reputation has grown so much that customers no longer need nudging towards it.

The poll results were announced at Melbourne’s Summer SpecTAPular beer festival late last month. Among the rest of WA’s brews, Nail Stout at No.16 and Nail Ale at 25 led the way, with Feral faring next best with White at 27th and Hophog IPA joint 72nd.. Colonial IPA (53), Gage Roads IPA (55), Little Creatures Rogers (57) and Little Creatures Pilsner (joint 82nd) were the others to register with voters. How The Local in Darlinghurst did Australia Day...

For a lot of people, Australia Day is all about celebrating our national heritage. For others, it's all about finding out what song was voted most popular this year. For beer nerds like us, it's all about the Hottest 100 Craft Beer countdown, hosted here at The Local Taphouse.

This year's countdown was super exciting!! From 100 to 1, the list was full of a bunch of our personal favorites and a whole lot of crowd pleasers. A lot of our regulars were in to witness the countdown and they did so while drinking some of Australia's favourite beers.

The top ten was a great mix of the expected favourites like Stone and Wood Pacific Ale, Feral Hop Hog and Little Creatures Pale Ale, as well as some unexpected rare releases such as the Mountain Goat and Mikkeller collaboration, Gypsy & the Goat and Feral's Watermelon Warhead, a face-puckeringly sour Berliner-Weisse with a hint of watermelon.

Other regulars came in dressed to the nines in true Aussie gear creating a great vibe whilst Triple J was counting down the Hottest 100 tunes of 2012. 

And now begins the countdown until next Australia Day, only 361 days to go!

Hottest 100 beers to be announced at Summer SpecTAPular this Sunday

The forecast (at this stage!) is for a sunny day of 30 degrees for the Summer SpecTAPular this coming Sunday. The kegs have all rolled in and we'll be ready to kick things off at noon.

We've also tallied the hundreds of votes in our ''Hottest 100 Aussie Brews'' 2008 poll and it's been great to see so many craft beers get a guernsey! We'll announce the Top Ten (and the order of all 100) on the day. Remember, we will randomly pick out a voter and if you're in the venue at the time, you'll win a case of each of the top 10 beers (subject to availability). If you're not around, you'll win the top 5 anyway!

Will Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale take the crown again or will two-time winner Little Creatures Pale Ale snatch back the title? Or will a new beer receive the honour for 2012?

The countdown last year saw a significant spike in visitor numbers to the websites of our supporters Australian Brews News and Crafty Pint where it provoked vigorous discussion and debate. Join in the conversation tomorrow via Facebook or Twitter (official hashtag is #h100beers).

The results will be revealed in the table below or on the Australian Brews News and Crafty Pint websites, Facebook and Twitter pages in lots of 10 beers from 12.40pm before counting down the final 10 beers at five minute intervals from 2.10pm. The #1 ‘hottest’ Aussie craft beer of 2012 will be announced at 3pm!
