Fete de la Musique in St. Kilda - June 20th

Join the Alliance Francais as they present their annual Fete de la Musique at The Local Taphouse on Thursday June 20th in the Bocce Room.

Music starts at 6:30pm with Josh Rennie-Hyne (folk) and continues with Nicolette Forte & Friends (roots & world music) until 8:30pm.

Stay on for more music in the main bar from 9pm where well known jazz musician Paul Coyle and his newly formed Paul Coyle Trio will continue the great tunes into the night.

Get your Smoke on with Schlenkerla in St. Kilda

Join our Ale Stars Tuesday, June 18th as we sample smoked beers from Schlenkerla - Germany's leading brewery of the famous 'rauchbier'.  We chat to Brewmaster Matthias direct from the brewery in Germany via Skype.

Stu 'Mario Bros' Mckinlay Skypes the Darlo Ale Stars

This month’s highly anticipated Ale Stars session, featuring Stu McKinlay from New Zealands own Yeastie Boys, was an epic night of colourful pants, questionable comedy, awesome conversation and extremely tasty beers. Our skype conversation with Stu was informative, fun and extremely engaging. Despite some of us being a little dusty from Good Beer Week and GABS the week before in Melbourne, everyone had a great time.

GABS 2013 - Cellarman's Selection

The highly anticapted Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular, or GABS for short, is being held this coming weekend in Melbourne and wraps up the end of Good Beer Week. With 92 specially brewed beers it's going to quite a task to sample them all, so we spoke to our local cellarman, Ozzy, and beertender, Scott, to gather their picks for GABS.

British Lions SpecTAPular - Darlinghurst

The Local Taphouse will hosting a British Lions SpecTAPular on Saturday 15th June as we welcome the British Lions to Sydney. The SpecTAPular is our festival in a pub event where we feature that day, 20 unique beers and 2 ciders across our taps. There will be 10 craft beers and 1 cider from the UK facing off against another 10 beers and 1 cider from some of our favourite Australian craft breweries.

Lucky guests will be dining and chatting with brewing 'royalty', drinking delicious beers from said royalty and enjoying the most scrumptious three-course menu around.

Over the past week at The Local we have been tapping the daily countdown for The Critic’s Choice Top 100 Beers of 2012.  These are the top twelve beers in Australia according to The Beer Lovers Guide and that are on tap today.

St. Kilda Ale Stars get a special visit from friends across the ditch

A very special edition of Ale Stars will happen on Tuesday the 21st May at 7pm.

Two of our favourite Kiwi Breweries, Yeastie Boys & Garage Project, will be in the house and bringing some of their amazing beers for us to try (line up to be announced).

Don't miss this great night - tickets can be purchased here and are limited, so you must have a ticket to enter, no walk-ins will be allowed for this special event.

The usual great food, beers and entertainment will ensue and at $40 it's a bargain.

Come in Spinner! A big ANZAC Day at Darlo...

 

It was a spirited ANZAC Day celebration at The Local in Darlo with games of Two-up facilitated throughout the day by Taphouse 'Beer & Cellar Dude", David (Ossy) Osgood. Punters got right into the spirit of it from the start with $50 bets being laid down within the first few games...

For ‘The Critics Choice Countdown Top 100 Beers of 2012’ we tapped the delicious, Hargreaves Hill ESB, which was announced on the day at position number 10. This ale is a 'new world' interpretation of the classic English style that carries hefty bitterness from substantial dry-hopping with a selection of US, NZ, and Aussie hops. We'll be tapping all of the top 12 over the period of the announcement. Congrats today to Two Birds at number 5 with their Sunset Ale!

It was great see the crowd buying servicemen and women drinks, and new staff members Shelley and Nathan getting their beer knowledge on from behind the bar.

All in all, a fantastic day...

Chuck delivers a Roundhouse kick to Darlo!

Last Wednesday saw the official release of the Illawarra Brewing Co./Local Taphouse collaboration beer, aptly named the "Chuck Norris Red Ale"; a) because it shares it's ginger colour with the famous action hero and b) because it delivers the biggest roundhouse kick to your taste buds, realigns your broken tonsils and BAM! kicks you again.

The beer itself is a carefully constructed blend of the new hop strain "Mosaic" and an assorted bag of malts including the German Carared, Carafa 1 and the Belgian Special B.

With some good ol' Western truckin' classics flowing over the sound system and the pint glasses well stocked the launch kicked off at 6pm and the taste anticipation was high as the complimentary Chucks poured over the bar for all to taste. With Delta Force 2 showing in the Louvre and Chuck himself signing autographs on the night, the atmosphere was as gripping as watching Bruce Lee pull Chuck's chest hair in Way of The Dragon.

As you can see from the photos, no hand was empty, no frown was upside down and no head went unlocked by Chuck!

The Local Taphouse would love to thank the brewers Dave McGrath, Shaun Blissett and Ashur Hall for making this beer such a special one and all of the people that attended the launch all walked away knowing that something unique was created that day -

 (oh yeah, and they also had a dance till close and travelled back home with hefty hangovers...)
