Barley's Angels in St. Kilda - Beer & Cupcakes!
A great night was had by our Melbourne Barley's Angels during our most recent session which had the theme Beer & Cupcakes. The 4 delicious mini cupcakes were specially created and provided by Jess from Sugadeaux along with an extra special cupcake to decorate and take home (we would have eaten it, but we were too full!)
Our host,Tiffany Waldron of Beer Girl Bites, was on hand to take us through the pairings - some obvious, like a cupcake with raspberry icing & Lindeman's Framboise beer. Others were not so obvious, like Mike's Heavy Petal rose infused beer with a mouthwatering vanilla bean cardamom cupcake. It was agreed by all that the combinations of sweet, sugary goodness and beer was a hit!
To see more photos from the night click here.
We can't wait until the next session of Barley's Angels in October. Stay tuned for the next theme and follow Barley's Angels here on Facebook for updates.

St Kilda Barley's Angels report

Thanks so much to everyone who came to enjoy the last Barley's Angels night for 2011. Some were so wonderfully dedicated they came straight from the airport after a holiday trip! As the festive season is upon us I thought it would be fitting to have a mini Christmas dinner to bring everyone together to celebrate. Starting with an entree of natural, salsa verde and gueuze vinaigrette oysters, chocolate covered grapes (a Connell family tradition) matched with Cantillon Gueuze 100% Lambic we then chatted with our two very special guests who brought with them Christmas treats of beer delights to match with the dishes!
Jayne of Two Birds Brewing provided us with her second batch of delicious Golden Ale, her gorgeous smile and a Two Birds T-shirt (for the trivia winners!). The Golden Ale was matched with the main course of smoked chicken with cranberry sauce, stuffing and crispy sage leaves. The wonderful Sam 'True South' Fuss shared with us Ninkasi's Angel and her intriguing 'Whatever you want me to be' coffee and cassia bark infused ale which was a divine partner for the warm homemade Christmas pudding with butterscotch sauce and creme anglaise....mmmmm. A huge thank you to Rich our Chef who did an amazing job with all of the dishes. Perfectly delicious.

I have really enjoyed engaging with all of you passionate beer lovers during these sessions and hope that you are finding it a warm and welcoming environment to share your thoughts and enthusiasm for the flourishing beer scene with a focus on women. We have lots of fun and big plans in store for the 2012 events so tell a friend and let's share the love of good beer!

Barley's Angels delicious night in St Kilda

With a great turnout of 25 enthusiastic (and thirsty) women, the third ever Australian chapter of Barley's Angels was off to a promising start.
As the ladies all got to know one another, three tasty chocolate morsels were served alongside three beer matches...a mouth watering sight.
The ladies then set out to find which was the most magical match and discovered that everyone had very different tastes which provided great discussion.
A pizza break came with a constructive discussion on where breweries are heading in terms of creating 'girly beers' and where they are going oh-so wrong. Our girls where much more taken by the rich, dark flavours of the Mornington Peninsula Porter infused with vanilla, than they were about 'low carb' money driven brews. We want flavour! We want complexity! We want diversity! Luckily for us, the night continued to provide an array of beer styles which, (left up to the ladies choice), were matched with our beautiful Youngs Double Chocolate Stout Pannacotta with Lindemans Framboise macerated strawberries and caramelized barley malt brittle. The magic match of the night was a toss up between the Meantime London Stout with Pannacotta and the Mountain Goat Coffee IPA with Pannacotta. Both interested choices with melt-in-your-mouth results!
Thanks to everyone's contribution of ideas for events and fun things to do as a women and beer focused group, we now have some work to do organizing some things...beer high teas, quiz nights, brewery tours! Endless fun ahead! Thanks ladies! See you all soon! x
Keep posted for the next Barley's Angels event via facebook or the Beer Diva website.

Barley's Angels: The Primary Mission
From Australia to the UK, Canada to the USA and even as far afield as Argentina, some of the world's leading beer experts have decided it's time to encourage women all over the globe to enjoy incredible brews.
These acclaimed evangelists will be unmasking the unjust myths that hold their fellow females back from the truth of craft beer, helping them to joyfully discover the unique and diverse flavours found in these artisan products, whilst beating down the doors of beer prejudice wherever they find them.
Lisa Morrison, Oregon Chapter Archangel explains, "The point about Barley's Angels is to ensure that women have a welcoming and friendly environment in which to learn more about the world's greatest beers and chart their own course of discovery."
Melissa Cole, London Chapter Archangel added, "There's so much fabulous flavour to experience, so many great food matches to enjoy and new friends to find in the craft beer world that it would be a crime for women to miss out."
Mission Make It-Possible
The second part of the Barley's Angels mission is to raise funds for the Pink Boots Society, an international trade association of women beer professionals, dedicated to furthering women's careers in beer brewing and the beer industry through scholarships and support networks.
Teri Fahrendorf, President of Pink Boots Society stated, "Women attending their first Barley's Angels chapter meeting will enjoy an environment connecting beer, food, beer history, and women's role in it. They'll have the opportunity to make connections through Barley's Angels worldwide communities when travelling, and will enjoy the camaraderie of new female friends over a pint of fine beer."
She continued, "I believe that women are developing our own beer culture that is strongly related to communication and community. Women's beer appreciation perhaps has less to do with alcohol and bittering rates, and more to do with balance, flavour, and a growing knowledge of women's historical role as the first beer brewers."
Lisa Morrison, Director of the Barley's Angels program added, "Ladies, it's time we got our malty mojo back."
